Quicker Injury Recoveries

If you’re suffering from an injury, like a sports injury or an accident, why don’t you try using your spirituality to improve your recovery?

Spirituality should be part of your rehab, because physical injury has mental components that slow down recovery. Like the fear part. The discouragement part. The feeling incomplete or impaired part. The traumatic memory part.

Starting with high school football, I went through a twenty-year period when one of my ankles was injured repeatedly. Toward the end of this period, I was out running one afternoon and wrenched the same ankle into a small hole covered by leaves. I was terrified…partly about the pain, but even more about the possibility of serious, permanent damage.

Almost at the instant of the accident, it came to me that the outcome was going to be better if I intentionally, consciously became more aware of the spiritual facts of this situation.

Here’s what I mean by “spiritual facts.” Infinite Spirit must see me and what I’m doing differently than I do. Since I am (as each of us is) His spiritual creation, Spirit must be seeing my spiritual self– it’s wholeness and well-being. What I see and think of as a physical ankle, He must see differently– as an undamageable spiritual structure possessing strength, grace and wholeness.

While struggling with pain and fear, I kept calming myself with these spiritual facts, encouraging myself to see the situation from this spiritual perspective, rather than from a perspective of fear or damage.

Here’s how Mary Baker Eddy describes the spiritual practice I was trying to embrace. It’s from her Spirit-mind-body healing guidebook, Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures:

“When an accident happens, you think or exclaim, “I am hurt!” Your thought is more powerful than your words, more powerful than the accident itself, to make the injury real.

Now reverse the process. Declare that you are not hurt and understand the reason why, and you will find the ensuing good effects to be in exact proportion to your disbelief in physics, and your fidelity to divine metaphysics….” (click here to read the whole passage)

You can do this too. Improve your outcome by keeping your mind open to “divine metaphysics.” Work with the energy of Spirit– use your intention to reverse emotional trauma and the conviction of being damaged.
